After a brilliant week staying in Raetihi, I’m now on to my next property, and this is my current abode. It’s a nice new house in a newish part of the suburb of Fitzroy, in Hamilton. They’re all modern homes around this area, and it’s surprisingly super quiet. You can hardly hear the cars going past the house and the neighbours themselves are quiet too. Even on workday mornings you don’t hear much when people are getting ready to head off to work or school etc. I don’t I’ve heard any dogs barking since I’ve been here. But I have heard a peacock. I think he must be living in the Hamilton Gardens, which is not too far from our street.
My housemate is a 9-year old doggie who goes by the name of Oakley. He’s a cross between a Golden Retriever and Border Collie and he has a really nice nature and is one of the quietest dogs I’ve met – I’ve had not one bark from him so far if somebody walks past the house or if a neighbour is pottering in their garden. Oakley was a bit lost at first after his owners had left but by the end of the day he was a totally different dog, and he really came out of his shell, and we’ve been best mates since.
We go walkies around our block and the next one each morning before it gets too hot, and we stop at the park on the way home for a proper run off the leash for a good hour. I take a tennis ball but he gets bored with it after the first 2-3 fetches. He seems to be more interested in the schmacko tidbits I carry in my pocket. He’s well behaved off the lead so that’s a bonus. Mind you, the treats might have something to do with it. 😉
And there’re also 3 chookies living out the back of the house, and they get to free range half the section. All in all it’s been a brilliant house sit. I’m here for several days and then it’s straight on to a new farm sit.
