My current house sit sees me in Okere Falls, which is located about 20kms north of Rotorua. It’s rather nice here. The house is perched on the crest of a hill amongst native bush, and it has a good view of Lake Rotoiti.
My housemates consist firstly of Angus, who is a two-year-old Husky-Alsatian cross. He’s a huge dog but super friendly so that’s good. 🙂 I take him walkies each morning up the road and through the bush reserve where you find the Kaituna River, Okere Falls, Trout Pool Falls etc. He’s ready to go out around 6am so we head off nice and early before the area gets too busy with freedom campers, trampers, and kayakers.
There’re a lot of good walking tracks in the reserve and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, including Tutea’s Cave and also the site where the historic Okere Falls hydro power station used to be. Each day we’ll go in different directions and along different tracks to mix things up. About a couple hours later, we’re back at the house for breakfast.
And then there is Wizz, who is a nice big fluffy kitty cat. The owners found him abandoned last year as a kitten and so they brought him home. There’s some speculation on his breed, but he has the big fluffy mane of a Norwegian Forest so that’s probably the dominant strain. Wizz is short for Wizard, as he has a knack for suddenly disappearing and reappearing. One minute, he can be beside you having his dinner, and the next he’s vanished and you spot him on the bottom lawn sunning himself.
Angus and Wizz are best of mates and get on really well. So much so that I have to make sure Wizz is shut inside the house when I take Angus for his morning walkies or he’s liable to follow us, which he has tried to do on a couple occasions.
